BT��To Host 2014 Humanities Fair

On Thursday, November 13 (National Humanities Month), the 2014 Humanities Fair will be held at the Brewer-Hegeman Conference Center at BT��from 9:45 a.m. (registration), with programs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.. The Humanities Fair is supported in part by a grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

It is open to high school students and their teachers to enable students to experience a typical day attending university humanities courses. Students will have their choice of attending sessions conducted by BT��professors in Philosophy, Religious Studies, History, English, Anthropology, African and African American Studies, Geography, Political Science, Latino and Latin American Studies, Asian Studies, and Gender Studies. BT��faculty will make presentations exploring the chosen theme of “Humanities and the Environment.”

Although it is not required, students are encouraged to submit original humanities projects to the Fair’s competition. Awards will be presented to highlight excellence and creativity in the areas of Poetry, Short Story, Essay, or Multimedia Presentation. Student projects based on the theme are welcome, as are projects on other topics.

Conway Symphony Orchestra To Present Free Community Concert

The Conway Symphony Orchestra will perform a free community concert on Friday, September 19, 2014 in Simon Park, located Front and Main Streets in downtown Conway.

The “Anniversary in the Park” concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. No tickets are required. The concert is underwritten by Southwestern Energy.

The orchestra will perform music for all ages, and everyone is encouraged to bring picnic baskets, blankets, and lawn chairs for the event to relax and enjoy live music as the sun goes down.

Izzy Getzov, conductor and music director of the CSO and director of orchestras for the University of Central Arkansas Department of Music, said the concert would be a season preview for what is to come. There will be highlights for the Nov. 1 opening night at UCA’s Reynolds Performance Hall when CSO will celebrate 30 years of musical excellence and education.

The one-hour performance at Simon Park will feature classical and popular music: Handel’s Watermusik; Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss, Jr.; a medley from the movie Frozen; and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2, Finale.

Although the concert is not aimed specifically at children, Getzov said he hoped the medley from Frozen would appeal to a younger audience and help with the concert’s theme of music for everyone.

In addition to making the performances accessible and enjoyable, CSO is involved in expanding community and educational outreach programs and aims to broaden their reach in classroom programs.

Arvest Bank Partners With BT��Bear Essentials Food Bank

Arvest Bank will be conducting their annual 1 Million Meals campaign from Wednesday, September 3, 2014 through Saturday, November 1, 2014. This year all nonperishable goods will be donated to the BT��Bear Essentials Food Pantry (www.uca.edu/foodbank).

In the past Arvest donated all their proceeds (monetary and perishable items) to the Arkansas Food Bank. We welcome Arvest’s support in their fight against hunger.

In addition to donating directly to the Bear Essentials Food Pantry, which is located on campus in Main 108, you, your family, and your friends may also donate at any of the five Arvest locations in Conway.

5th Annual Amigo Cup Soccer Challenge Begins September 21, 2014

On Sunday, September 21, 2014, BT��will sponsor the 5th Annual Amigo Cup Soccer Challenge. This year’s tournament will be divided into two parts. First, in the morning we will host a children’s (10 and under) Latino soccer team tournament. In the afternoon, we will host a soccer tournament for Latino students attending high school.

This will be a festive event that will include soccer games, Latino music, food vendors, campus tours, and live stream broadcasts of the tournament. There will be hundreds of Latino youth, family members and friends on the BT��campus participating and watching the tournament. BT��will receive statewide media coverage – especially in Latino households – about the tournament.
