Dr. MJ Meg Tsai is a soprano, vocal pedagogue, and arts educator whose career combines performance, teaching, and community engagement. Originally from Taipei, Taiwan, she has performed throughout the United States, the United Kingdom, and Taiwan, with repertoire spanning opera, concert works, and musical theatre.
Praised by the Birmingham Post (UK) for her 鈥渕ost genuine performance,鈥� Dr. Tsai has appeared with the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, Shreveport Opera, Louisiana Opera, Spotlight on Opera, and Diversit脿 Opera Arts Company. Recent operatic roles include the Cat Lady in Speed Dating Tonight!, Pamina in Die Zauberfl枚te, Annina in La Traviata, Lola in Cavalleria rusticana, the Narrator in The Hiding Tree, Polly Peachum in Die Dreigroschenoper, Colette in Le Devin du Village, and No茅mie in Cendrillon. As a concert soloist, she has collaborated with orchestras and arts organizations across Louisiana, Texas, and Taiwan.
An award-winning performer, Dr. Tsai received the Bronze Award at the 7th International Chinese Vocal Competition and is the recipient of both the Cecil Drew Oratorio Prize and the Birmingham Conservatoire Singing Prize.
Prior to UCA, Dr. Tsai was the Assistant Professor of Voice and Director of Opera at Grambling State University, where she teaches applied voice, class voice, music theory, and aural skills while directing opera and musical theatre productions. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes healthy vocal technique, artistic curiosity, disciplined practice, and independent musicianship. She is committed to helping students develop the technical skills, artistic confidence, and critical thinking necessary for lifelong success as performers, educators, and creative professionals.
Beyond the classroom, Dr. Tsai actively mentors prospective and current students through recruitment events, masterclasses, clinics, and individual advising. Her students have earned recognition in regional and national vocal competitions and have continued graduate study at universities across the United States. She values collaboration with public school and community college music educators and is dedicated to building strong connections between universities and the communities they serve.
As a scholar and clinician, Dr. Tsai regularly presents research and masterclasses on vocal pedagogy and performance practice. Her work has been selected through peer review for presentation at regional and national conferences, including the International Congress of Voice Teachers (ICVT). She is an active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), the HBCU Opera & Musical Theatre Collective, and the Association of Vocal Arts in Taiwan.
Dr. Tsai earned the Doctor of Musical Arts in Voice Performance from the University of North Texas, the Master of Music and Postgraduate Diploma from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, UK, and the Bachelor of Music from Fu Jen Catholic University. She also holds a Certificate in Television Directing for the Performing Arts from Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture.
