M02-17 – BTPRESIDENT WINFRED THOMPSON COLLECTION

Winfred L. Thompson is a native of Gurdon, Arkansas.  He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and a master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.  His Juris Doctorate (J.D.) was earned at George Washington University.

Thompson served in the Peace Corps and later was an assistant to U.S. Representative Ray Thornton.  He also practiced law before his career at Arkansas State University.  At ASU Thompson was director of development and later served as vice president for planning and institutional advancement.

In 1984 Thompson went to the University of Arkansas as assistant to the president of the university system.  He also served as vice president for finance and administration, and later as vice chancellor for finance & administration of the Fayetteville campus.

Dr. Thompson came to BTon April 1, 1988 as the institution’s seventh president.  He would continue in this position until December 21, 2001.  After leaving BThe became chancellor of the American University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.

Dr. Thompson and his Wife, Carmen, have a daughter-Emily, and a son-Michael.
